Beddgelert Bridge PR116
by Rob Piercy
£12.00Offset litho print of an original watercolour.
Open Edition.
Beddgelert is a pretty mountain village located 7 miles north of Porthmadog. Translated, Beddgelert means Gelert's Grave and is based on the legend of Gelert, an Irish wolfhound who was left to guard the son of Prince Llewelyn. When the prince returned from his hunting trip and found his son's cot upturned and Gelert with blood dripping from his jaws, Llewelynn assumed that his dog had attacked the baby and killed the dog. It was later that Llewelyn found his son unharmed lying next to the body of a large wolf which Gelert had killed.
There is though a belief in the village that the owner of the Goat Hotel had manufactured the tale to attract customers to stay at his hotel.
